How to ask a girl for a movie date? That’s a question which seems to be on the mind of most shy guys. There’s this girl you’ve been crushing on for quite a while and you really want to ask her out for a movie, but you simply don’t know how to go about it! Have no fear; I’m here to help you out with that one!

Set the Ball Rolling

First off, if you haven’t done so already, you need to muster up the guts to go and talk to her. Get a conversation going, if she’s in class with you, ask her for notes, or offer to help out if she’s missed class and needs to catch up, or more simply, just get together and complain about how crappy your teacher is (do make sure that’s not her favorite teacher!).

Keep your eyes and ears open and find out her interests and what kind of movies she likes. If she’s a chick flick kind of girl, then here’s the bad news, you’re probably going to have to watch that chick flick! Start off by asking her what the last movie she saw is. Then build from there and ask her what she wants to see next.

The Shy Approach and the Sly Approach

Then, here’s the old trick, buy tickets for a movie which you know she’ll like, then tell her that you’ve got an extra ticket for that and your friend cancelled on you last moment. Ask her if she’d like to come along with you instead, and voila, that’s all in a day’s work! Of course, you need to buy tickets for the movie when you know she’s free! End with something like, “this was fun, we should do this some other time”!

Or, if the prospect of being alone with the girl of your dreams intimidates you, schedule an outing with a group of friends, try and get some of her friends to go with you also and invite her to be a part of the gang! One question that I get all the time is:

Relax and don’t make out too much, no heavy make-out sessions, she thereby will not feel slutty and it will all be normal, that’s why she’ll see you again. Be cocky-funny (“I’m going to charge you for these kisses” for example) Leave her alone, have fun with your friends and then comeback.

You need to get all those thoughts that keep circling around and around in your head on paper where they belong so that you can stop thinking about them. This will also help you make room for more positive and rewarding thoughts.

4. Make an “I’m grateful for” list. Write down everything your grateful for. Even if at the time it seems minor or insignificant. You’ll find from doing this self esteem activity that you have a lot of things in your life that you are currently taking for granite. But once you become aware of this, you can start giving thanks for everything and start attract more good into your life.

5. Make peace with yourself. Yes! Right now, forgive yourself for anything and everything you feel ashamed of or guilt about. These feelings of shame and guilt will keep you stuck in the past for years to come if you don’t get rid of them now. Give yourself a clean slate. A fresh start.

In the previous article on improving self esteem, I discussed the way that other people will not see you the way you see yourself; I also introduced the notion that improving your memory can be an aid to increasing your confidence and self esteem. By recognizing both those factors, you could have two tools that you can make use of, as you work on the task of improving your self esteem over the coming months.

In this article, I will look in a bit more detail at ways you may be able to set about, methodically, improving your self esteem over time. Bear in mind, there is no overnight solution, and there may be set backs along the road, even if you make initial progress.

Shifting the Balance of Self Esteem

To simplify matters, let us say that your self esteem is a balance between negative and positive impressions you may of yourself. The chances are that your own imbalance is not extreme. Perhaps 45% positive and 55% negative is a typical case, just for the sake of illustration.

By thinking of the problem in that way, it is kept in perspective. Do not think that you have to go from 0% positive to 100% positive. That would be a gargantuan task. In the illustration, there is a 10% gap between negative and positive, and it is enough to make you feel quite low about yourself. Remember, though, the good thing about a balance is that to find equilibrium, you do not have to move the full 10%. A 5% improvement on the positive side will reduce the negative side by 5%, bringing about a 50/50 balance. In such a case, you would notice a significant improvement in your self esteem.

If you are aiming to improve your self esteem, you can divide your approach into two fronts: expanding the positives and reducing the negatives. By so doing, you can eventually shift the balance in favour of the positive self through your own efforts.

Expanding The Positives In Your Self Esteem

In reality, there is an infinite amount you can do to make your self image more positive. Here are just a few suggestions which you may be able to build on.

1. Having examined the occasions, situations, places and people, with which you feel most comfortable and positive, consider what changes you can make to spend more time in that environment. You need to expose yourself to as much of these positive influences as possible.

2. If any of those positive environments relates to some sort of interest, hobby or expertise, try to expand your knowledge in that area. For example, you may love gardening and feel happy chatting to a couple of neighbors in particular about gardens, plants and flowers. In such a case, you could easily increase your knowledge and deepen your interest, and join a local gardening club that meets once a week or more.

Once settled in your new club, you could then encourage your two gardening neighbors to join you. That way, you will be getting more positive exposure, feel the benefit of taking the initiative, and also expand your knowledge of what is a popular discussion topic.

The time you spend with other gardening enthusiasts will be positive, and take over time and space which might otherwise have been negative, taking you that little bit closer to the negative/positive balance. You can apply that example to just about any hobby, interest, or area of expertise.

3. It is likely that your working environment is a breeding ground for your lack of self esteem. I say that simply because much of your waking time is spent at work. Ask yourself what the most positive aspects of your job and the working environment are, and then consider what you may be able to do to make them more prominent.

For example, is there an aspect of the job for which others seem to hold you in high regard? Do people seek your advice on that topic? If so, try to encourage people to seek your advice even more, and show that you welcome it. At the same time, continue to build knowledge in that area of the work, and in others you think colleagues might later benefit from your increased knowledge. In so doing, though, remind yourself regularly that those people who are approaching you, do so because they respect your knowledge and opinion. Try to see yourself as they see you.

4. As a general rule, have an education plan for yourself so that, regardless of age, you are always growing as a person. Study aspects of self improvement, such as success strategies, alongside improving your knowledge and ability related to your chosen career path. All the time you will be building your own character, which in itself will help with your self confidence.

5. Use visualization to help you achieve the outward personality you would like others to see, and for you to see in yourself. Combined with meditation and relaxation techniques, visualization can be a very powerful mental tool when used regularly and consistently.

6. In conjunction with 5, sit down and make a plan to achieve a more positive self esteem and reach your personality goal. 5 years is a sensible time period to cover, but you will be able to work on parts of your plan immediately. Be determined that your plan will be implemented and become an integral part of your life.

Reducing the Negatives in Your Self Esteem

Having carried out the self examination discussed in Part you can also set about reducing the negative influences on your self esteem. Such influences can be in the form of individuals, groups of individuals, a work routine, a job or any other part of your life. Here are a few suggestions:

1. If one or more of the negative influences relate to your job, then bear that in mind when working on your plan. A more amenable job, even a new career, could make the world of difference to you. A fresh start in a new environment can make a big difference, and you can make the most of it, especially if you grasp the notion that you have an opportunity to project a new image, to people who do not know you.

It is best not to rush into the new job, but to plan what you need to do to get the new job you desire and need.

2. If you have “friends” or relatives who seem to drag you down for any reason, try to ease them out of your life. You have the right not to spend time with people who are a negative influence on your confidence or happiness.

3. If it is feasible, go traveling. By traveling, I do not mean going on a routine vacation with a lot of holidaymakers. That’s not traveling. Try to go to a completely different type of country and culture, maybe a third world country, off the usual holiday track, but somewhere with the reputation of being hospitable. Go alone, and the people will welcome you, and see you as someone very special; they may even treat you like a prince or princess. In one fell swoop, you will be eliminating all the negative influences in one move, at least for 2 or 3 weeks.

Three weeks away in a different world should also gift you with a different perspective on life. You may well find that new perspective, when carried back home, will increase your confidence. Once you know you can be an adventurer, you may have the courage to carry that into other areas of your life.

The above, of course, are just a few ideas for a mild case of low self esteem. Extreme cases may require direct professional help. However, by utilizing some of the ideas from the two articles, you may at least get the process underway to increase your self esteem to a more pleasant level.

Ten Hot Tips For Improving Your Self-Esteem!

1. But you are good enough
No matter what you do you feel it isn’t good enough. Is this you? If so this is a powerful belief with its seeds planted firmly in your past. Ask yourself where this belief came from – who could you never please?

2. Write it down
Write down the beliefs this person gave you – all the put downs. You need to go through the garbage to get to the gold – and you will get to the gold.

3. Catch yourself for a good cause – you…
Become more aware of the words you say and the actions you take. Do you criticise yourself when things go wrong? If so then make a note of these as well.

4. Now you’ve got your list start tapping…
I’m a big fan of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) tapping. You tap with your fingertips on energy points (they were discovered thousands of years ago) and repeat the negative belief and say that you accept it and love yourself anyway. This is the opposite of ‘what we resist persists’. The negative energy around the belief and the whole problem gets smaller and eventually dissolves – this stuff really works.

5. Now for the Biggie – Forgiveness
When you hold onto resentment towards any person who did you wrong, you are bound to them by an unbreakable emotional link. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and set yourself free.

6. When you can’t forgive…
If you’ve tried and you just can’t forgive someone understand that they are continuing to harm your self esteem and are keeping you from being the self confident person you would like to be. Forgiving someone isn’t about letting them off the hook, it’s letting yourself off the hook.

7. Be grateful for the past…
When your confidence is low it can be difficult to see what’s good about ourselves and our past. Write down any achievements – big or small – from your life. No one can take those away from you. Include the good friends or good times in your list.

8. Be grateful for a more self confident you…
Now that you’re confidence is growing make a note of any changes – what you’ve done differently recently now that you’ve working on building your self esteem. You may begin noticing yourself feeling a little more positive.

9. Learn and then use confidence building and assertiveness techniques…
There are quite a few assertiveness techniques you can use to build your self esteem. These include The Broken Record Technique and Fogging. You can find these with an internet search or learn them at a confidence workshop.

10. Keep going forward…
Even baby steps count. With the tips for improving self esteem above you will be moving forward to a more confident you…..don’t forget that.

Greece; ever since I moved to America and for years thereafter, I have been trying to find news, any news about Greece in the local and national US newspapers. But, after years of failing to do so, I came to the realization that Greece, is really too small – it does not matter. This of course was to change with 2010 rolling in…

It has been now about two months that, to my shocking surprise, we have been bombarded with news about Greece. Every single day, there is one or more stories in the front page of the Wall Street Journal and other newspapers, all analyzing the importance of Greece in the European Union in particular, and the world’s financial health in general.

I have spent the last few days in Denmark and Germany and a day does not go by without seeing Greece in the front, middle and back pages of the Financial Times and other newspapers written in languages beyond the four I can personally speak. So the question is, what makes little-tiny Greece, all of a sudden the center of the universe again? Don’t get me wrong, I am thrilled that Greece is in the news daily, but the question is why does Greece matter?

Greece is a minor euro zone economy, perhaps 2-3% of GDP, but what matters is the fact that Greece uses the Euro as its currency and the threat alone that Greece may go under sends shockwaves to the financial community, for the fear of one country going down may take other countries with similar problems with it as well.

The issue became critical when Greece announced that its budget deficit as percent of GDP, was way above what was reported by the previous administration, 12 or 13% to be exact, way above the required by the Union 3%. One only had to look at similar countries like Portugal and Spain to see they too had very high budget deficits. The PIGS, as they call them, i.e., Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain make for a very unstable economic group, which, if can not meet its financial obligations to the community, puts unsustainable pressure on the Euro with the now known consequences. In fact, the Euro has gone on a free fall almost overnight, from being the dominant currency with dollar exchange rates around $1.5, to losing more than 5% of its value against the dollar, to an eight month low of $1.3529 as recently as two months ago and some analysts predict it may go down to $1.3, or even less.

So what can the mighty US learn from tiny Greece? Is it possible that the US, by running, or even threatening to run huge deficits, as the proposed social plans by the Obama administration indicate, would face similar disastrous economic situation that would severely and adversively impact the dollar, vis-à-vis the major currencies? Some people argue that this is not possible because unlike the EU where countries are not really legally bound by a single government, the US can legally mobilize financial resources and assist states that are in dire straits, something that the EU is currently challenged with. However, it is not the state budgets that create global havoc, but rather the budget deficits at the US federal level which are currently huge by historical standards that create serious risks and in turn scare away investors – like China, who are looking to expand their recently acquired wealth into more productive capital markets. One can already see that current US deficits, even before Mr. Obama’s proposals are approved, have scared away investors who are already looking for safer havens. China for one thing is building its gold stockpiles rather than investing in US real estate capital.

A country’s budget deficits, its liabilities to its people and foreign investors, put pressure on its ability to borrow in the open markets and eventually run the risk of seeing its bonds down rated. This is exactly what has happened to Greece and what can happen to America, if it doesn’t get its (White) house in order.
America has recently used extreme financial behavior by spending immense internal capital to bail out the auto industry and Wall Street on the premise they were too big to fail. This was the wrong long term strategy which bound to have two effects: 1) these industries have no incentive to put their house in order and, 2) the US citizens at large will be financing this error for ever.

It is interesting to see that Germany, the country that all other economies are compared to in Europe, decided that under no circumstances will it bail out Greece for the above two reasons. In the long run, Greece will have to find its way out of this financial Greek tragedy and be a better EU partner. There is no such thing as “too big” or “too small” for that matter, to fail!

For the US, tough times are ahead. It would be a shame if Greece, where democracy started, could not teach the world a lesson, and America is where democracy ended. For the shake of our children, I need to be proven wrong.
